Ephesians 3:12

Context

Ephesians 3 [10.] to the intent that now through the assembly the manifold wisdom of God might be made known to the principalities and the powers in the heavenly places, according to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord; in whom we have boldness and access in confidence through our faith in him. Therefore I ask that you may not lose heart at my troubles for you, which are your glory.

Ephesians 3 [14.] For this cause, I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, that you may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inward man; that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; to the end that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be strengthened to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth, and to know Christ’s love which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Meaning:

  • In Whom:

The phrase "in whom" refers to Christ, establishing a foundational connection between believers and the person of Jesus. It highlights that our boldness and access are rooted in our relationship with Christ, emphasizing the centrality of Christ in our faith.

  • Boldness and Access:

The subsequent words, "we have boldness and access," convey a powerful truth. As believers, our connection with Christ grants us the remarkable privileges of boldness and direct access to God. This implies a confidence and assurance that transcends human limitations, allowing us to approach God with freedom and assurance.

  • In Confidence Through Our Faith:

The prepositional phrase "in confidence through our faith in him" further elucidates the mechanism of our boldness and access—it is through our faith in Christ. This highlights the intimate link between faith and our ability to approach God with confidence. Faith becomes the bridge that connects us to the abundant grace and favor of God.

Significance:

Grace-Fueled Boldness: Ephesians 3:12 unveils a grace-fueled boldness that characterizes the believer's approach to God. This boldness is not rooted in our merits or achievements but flows from our identity in Christ. It is a boldness that stems from knowing that we are accepted, loved, and welcomed by God.

Direct Access to God: The notion of access implies an intimate relationship. In the context of Ephesians 3:12, believers have direct access to the Creator of the universe. This access is not mediated by intermediaries but is granted through our connection with Christ. It signifies a closeness and immediacy in our communion with God.

Confidence through Faith: The phrase "in confidence through our faith in him" underscores the pivotal role of faith. Our confidence is not grounded in our abilities or circumstances but finds its foundation in our unwavering trust in Christ. It is through this faith that we approach God with assurance, knowing that He is faithful to His promises.

Cross References:

Hebrews 4:16: A parallel concept: "Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need." Both Ephesians 3:12 and Hebrews 4:16 emphasize the boldness with which believers can approach God, highlighting the accessibility of God's grace.

Romans 5:1-2: Resonates with the theme of access through faith: "Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand." This parallel reinforces the idea that our access to God is through faith in Christ.

In Conclusion: Ephesians 3:12 encapsulates a profound truth that defines the believer's experience—an experience characterized by grace-infused boldness, direct access to God, and confidence rooted in unwavering faith. As we reflect on this verse, may it deepen our understanding of the richness of our relationship with Christ and inspire us to approach God with the bold assurance that comes from faith.
