Proverbs 16:11

Context

Proverbs 16 [10.] Inspired judgments are on the lips of the king.

    He shall not betray his mouth.

Honest balances and scales are Yahweh’s;

    all the weights in the bag are his work.

It is an abomination for kings to do wrong,

    for the throne is established by righteousness.

Righteous lips are the delight of kings.

    They value one who speaks the truth.

The king’s wrath is a messenger of death,

Cross-References:

Leviticus 19:35-36: "You shall do no unrighteousness in judgment, in measures of length, of weight, or of quantity. You shall have just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin: I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt." This passage commands fair practices in measurements, linking just behavior to the character of God and His deliverance.

Micah 6:11: "Shall I count them pure with the wicked balances, and with a bag of deceitful weights?" This verse condemns those who use deceitful weights, highlighting that such practices are incompatible with purity and righteousness.

Proverbs 11:1: "A false balance is an abomination to Yahweh, but accurate weights are his delight." This proverb explicitly states that dishonesty in measurements is detestable to God, while accuracy and fairness are pleasing to Him.

Luke 16:10: "He who is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and he who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much." Conclusion: Proverbs 16:11 emphasizes that justice, integrity, and fairness are integral to God’s character and should be mirrored in our lives. The just balance and scales symbolize not just accurate measurements in commerce but a broader principle of fairness and honesty in all dealings. This divine standard challenges us to uphold ethical practices, avoid deception, and advocate for justice in our communities.
